About Recent Entries

Whoa...been a while. Jun. 22nd, 2009 @ 08:22 am
I haven't checked LJ since we went on our trip to DC around Memorial Day, so if anything exciting has happened, please let me know, since I'm not going to be reading back entries, due to being stupidly busy lately.

In Tang news, we got a new kitten. Mat's gotten tooth number five. Chris had his first Father's Day. I was getting more sleep, until tooth six started being an ass.

All in all, a good LJ-free month here.

Since many of you I know from Portland... May. 23rd, 2009 @ 02:35 pm
If you were a PGE customer anytime between Oct. 1, 2000, and Sept. 30, 2001, you may be eligible for a refund. The Oregon Public Utility Commission has revised the amount that customers should have paid for the Trojan Power Plant, so PGE is refunding the difference of $33.1 million.

The amount you could receive is based on what type of customer you were (residential or business), how much electricity you used, and how many other customers receive a refund. For example, the amount of the average refund for residential customers is estimated at approximately $23, but your amount may be lower or higher.

Apply now for a refund.

Holy cats! May. 21st, 2009 @ 11:18 am
So I kind of figured that the first word(s) Mat said would be Mama or Dada, something we said a lot, and that clearly was important to identify. I totally forgot that other word we said a lot, one that was much more interesting than either mom, or dad.

So, with no further ado, I present to you my son's first word...

Cat. Or, sometimes, "ki cat."

He will crawl over to Scarlett, and shout "CAT!" and then thwap her. Chris witnessed this as well, and assured me I wasn't being a crazy parent.

Insanity. How did I get a crawling, talking baby?

Also, Mat has something to say to all of you:

Mission: Naked Butt Time May. 20th, 2009 @ 03:35 pm
Mission 1: Put pantsless baby in pack n' play to give him some air and sun on his rashy butt, while I work on the yard.
Status: Epic fail.

Mission 2: Spread blanket on deck while pantsless baby crawls around, plays with toys, gets some air time for his poor rashy butt, and eventually get peed on by said baby.
Status: Epic success.

It's LARP widow weekend again...woo. May. 16th, 2009 @ 12:12 pm
Mat's nursing strike lasted about a day, and was possibly the longest 30-ish hours of my life. I never realized how many of my good feelings about myself as a parent hinged on nursing my MatMat. I almost cried the first time he nursed while fully awake. Luckily, he was able to take a bottle the few times he needed one. It also never occurred to me how hard it was to get a baby to take a nap without nursing.

Since Mat and I are going solo this weekend, we're planning to go amucking around town, so I can keep my sanity. Baby-in-a-Moby is much easier to watch than baby-who-crawls-with-lightning-speed. Plus, my yarn store is having a kickass sale, and I want to go fondle some yarn. Maybe I'll see if they have yarn for more home made Babylegs.

For lunch today, Mat and I had some black bean soup with rice (Trader Joe's Latin Style Black Bean Soup is the shit...add a can of Cuban style beans, and it's even better!), although mine had goat's milk mozzarella (again, Trader Joe's FTW) and his did not. The key to feeding my son anything on a spoon is apparently to be eating it with a spoon myself. I prefer to let him just have well cooked sticks of food, but sometimes tasty things must come in a more liquid-y variety than can be consumed with only wee fingers.

Blargh, and then some more blargh. May. 13th, 2009 @ 11:09 am
Mat decided yesterday to have a nursing strike. I can get him to nurse if he's just waking up, or if he's asleep, but that's it.

Thank goodness for [info]ladyleo who is both helping me keep my sanity about the whole thing, and loaning me her electric pump. Mat apparently will take a bottle now, provided he gets to hold it, and play with it occasionally. So, he's getting some food, but I still pump like crap, so it's not as much as if he were nursing. :P

Woo!...? May. 11th, 2009 @ 01:33 pm
Turns out, I don't have mastitis, I have ductitis. Woo! I'm supposed to be massaging the area, manually expressing from it, and keeping it warm. I got something for the pain, but really there's nothing else I can do.

Bonus points to my doc for the use of the phrase, "I'm going to have to milk you." I don't have any (okay, 2, but big whoop) leukocytes in my milk, so no need for antibiotics, which makes me happy. Less chance of Mat getting thrush. 'Cause thrush AND pain in the tatas sounds like less fun than just one at a time.

In two weeks, I get my 9 month breastfeeding ribbon. I totally earned it this month. :D

Eventful day! May. 7th, 2009 @ 08:16 pm
I cooked Indian food (I did SO, [info]hollyking!!! People even ate it!!), Mat got tooth number 4, Mat tried some dal with ginger and turmeric, and I did yard work and laundry. Time to pass out now.

One day, I will have time to make a coherent update.

Imph. May. 3rd, 2009 @ 12:48 pm
Well, I decided to work on a sewing project this weekend, and managed to break the needle on it. I figured out why, and know how to fix it now. So I guess I'm learning?

I'm just glad it didn't break off, and embed itself in my eye, like I always warned [info]christhegeek it would, when she offered to teach me to sew.

Blarg. May. 1st, 2009 @ 11:09 pm
After an hour of trying to get Mat back to sleep (Chris is at his dork meeting), I finally gave up and came downstairs with my now awake baby to check the webbernets. Every time I'd try to get him settled, he'd drift off for 5 minutes, and then wake up screaming like I was killing him. He'd just nursed, he was comfortable with relation to temperature, and I couldn't find anything else wrong, except that I wouldn't lay in the exact position he wanted (which was always killing my back) for hours at a time.

So, I'm being awesome mom, and letting my 8 month old sit on my lap and play with my nursing tank straps, while I surf the net. Go me. Better than selling him to the gypsies, I guess.

Chris (who is the awesomest husband in the world) just got Mat to sleep, by rocking him. I honestly have no idea what to do with myself...wait, I'm going to have 1/2 a glass of wine.

Geography fail. Apr. 28th, 2009 @ 04:01 pm
When I took Mat in for some of his shots today, the nurse was trying to convince me I wanted to do polio shots ASAP, because we were going to Thailand. Her reasoning? There was a polio outbreak in India. We're going to get them done before we go, but, uh...

It's Mat's 8 month birthday today (holy crap!), so I thought I'd post some pictures. Sorry about the quality, they're phone pics.

Random bits Apr. 22nd, 2009 @ 07:27 pm
This is the obituary for my cousin who passed away. My grandmother just passed it on to me today.

For dinner tonight, I made chicken breasts, wrapped in turkey bacon, smothered in vodka sauce and lite swiss cheese. I also made fettuccine with more vodka sauce, and zucchini. Mat got a noodle, and some zucchini. He scraped some of the flesh off of the zucchini, and waved his noodle around wildly. He occasionally put it in his mouth and gummed it, but mostly, there was wild noodle waving. I wish we'd had a video camera.

My computer was infested by an asscrapton of spyware and viruses, but after I installed avast! (Thanks, [info]ladyleo!), it finally seems to be gone. Woot.

Home again, home again... Apr. 19th, 2009 @ 01:15 pm
We got home last night at about 1:30am.

My cold went away in the middle of the trip, which was good, and Mat never got it at all. I'm so glad we went, despite my reservations.

The funeral was very beautiful. There was a little family weirdness/drama, but next to none compared to my other side of the family. My cousin looked very different to me, but it had been years since I had seen her.

I met my other cousin's husband, who is named (conveniently) Chris. He's young, but funny and witty, and he fit right in with my family nuttiness. He also won epic bonus points for (while I was nursing) leaning over to Mat and commenting that it was only this good for the next 2 years, and then you had to wait another 13 years to see boobs again. :)

Mat was very skittish around my family initially, but by the second day, he had warmed right up to them, especially my aunt Vickie, who apparently plays the best game of peek-a-boo ever. My grandfather made Mat sob for the first day or so whenever he saw him (I'm betting it was his large, bushy eyebrows...they kinda scared me too...), but after some work, he made friends with him, and even sat on his lap. My grandpa is still thrilled we named the baby after him.

Strangely the worst part of the trip was about 20 minutes from home. We'd gotten off I-75 on to I-285 (I had just woken up), and there was a motorcycle that was backfiring a lot. He swerved across several lanes, and tried to get off on the exit. The van there didn't see him, and broadsided him. I heard the impact, and then saw the bike run in to the divider. I called 911, but I have no idea what happened to him. I checked AJC, but there was no report of the crash.
